Overview

The community service section is designed to provide an awareness, understanding, and supportive environment for participants who show an interest in volunteering. This living option is focused toward students who desire to live and learn in an experiential fashion through participation in community service, citizenship, and leadership activities.

About Fletcher Hall

Fletcher Hall houses 166 students, Resident Assistants, and 1 Graduate Hall Director. Fletcher is an air-conditioned hall in the East Campus Residence Area in the immediate vicinity of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium at Florida Field, the O’Connell Center, the Advising Center, and the Florida Gym. For more information about the facility, click here.

Program Goals

  • Provide opportunities to complete at least 8 hours of community service per semester.
  • Promote involvement with the campus community through residence hall activities, student organizations, and interaction with faculty, staff and other students.
  • Assist students in developing responsibility for active world citizenship.

How Do I Apply?

Because of the nature of the Community Service Section, students wishing to reside in this area must show a sincere interest in the program and be willing to sign a contract to that effect.

Current Residents
Complete the application and return it to Linda Monroe at the Area Office.  In order to be considered, you must have made your $100.00 lottery payment (pre-payment credit toward the Fall 2008 rental charge) on or before January 16 at 3:30 pm AND be selected in the housing lottery.

Future Residents
Complete the application and email it to Ryan Winget (ryanw@housing.ufl.edu). Housing staff will select students to live in the Community Service Section. Housing application and contract materials will be sent to participating students. If selected, students will be assigned to rooms within the Community Service Section.

Other Academic Resources

Once a week, Murphree Commons offers an onsite academic advisor and occasional tutoring and exam review sessions.

The Center for Leadership and Service (CLS) provides the structure and resources to prepare students to become productive citizens and assume roles of leadership and service in a culturally diverse and increasingly complex society. The Center fosters lifelong service and civic participation by engaging the University with its greater community in action, change and learning. For more information on the CLS click here.
