Emory Gardner Diamond Memorial Village was built to house married students and their families who were displaced when Flavet I and II were closed in August 1965. Emory Diamond was President of the University of Florida Student Body (1950-51), Clerk of the Honor Court (1949-50), and Mayor of Flavet Village II (1949).
While President of the Student Body, Diamond lobbied for an increase in the student activity fee to support the new student union building later called the J. Wayne Reitz Union. He encouraged establishment of a Student Traffic Court — still in existence — and served as member and manager of the Gator Band. Diamond is credited with initiating the concept of bloc seating for students at the football stadium and for offering planned and monitored student government exchanges and activities in an attempt to curb negative rivalry between University of Miami and University of Florida fans. Diamond graduated with honors in September 1950 and died 9 years later in a private airplane crash.
