Important reminder — Please check with your RA/ARA before purchasing any extension cords to assure that they meet UF Housing requirements. Only electrical cords with a 14 gauge or heavier rating are allowed. They may not exceed 10 feet in length and must have 3 wire grounded plugs. Only one extension cord per outlet is allowed with only one item plugged into each extension cord. Extensions cords can not be strung together across an area. Multi-plug adapters MUST have a circuit breaker. Please check the Fire Safety Booklet and/or Community Standards which was given to you at check in. Your RA/ARA or the Area Desk can supply you with additional information concerning electrical requirements within the residence hall.

Kilowatt Hour Information for the Keys Complex

Your electric use is budgeted in the Keys. There is a sticker in your apartment on the breaker box in the hall. The sticker tells you when the meters are read and the maximum usage levels included in current rental rates. If you exceed these kilowatts the total excess is divided by the number of residents in the apartment and each resident is charged equally. The biggest users of electric in each apartment are the heat, air conditioning, and hot water.

Helpful hints for you and your roommates to conserve electricity:

  • Set AC between 74-78 degrees
  • If you have a problem with your heat or AC submit a HAWK request
  • Do not turn the thermostat ON & OFF when leaving the apartment: leave the gauge at one temperature
  • Do not leave windows open when the heat or AC is on
  • Keep the refrigerator and freezer full – it takes less energy to keep chilled food and liquids cold than empty air space
